Starting the New Testament

After more than 10 months of reading in the Old Testament, we are finally into the New Testament. Leave your thoughts below.

  1. It is easy to forget how large the OT/NT ratio is. And truthfully, I should probably spend more time reading and studying the OT.

At the beginning of the year, I thought the hardest part to stay with would be Leviticus, but at least for me, the hardest part was the prophets. It was hard to be motivated to read for weeks about hard to understand events that would take place in the future (to the writer).

I do think the I have a better understanding of the minor prophets from reading through them chronologically. Reading them in their historical context clarifies many of the warnings.

  2. I was surprised to see that the editor of the Daily Bible considers the clearing of the temple in John 2 to be a separate incident from the clearing of the temple in Mark 11, Matthew 21, and Luke 19. I had always assumed they were referring to the same event. The NIV Study bible cross references view them as parallel passages.

  3. BTW, the 'other' clearing of the temple is in the reading for Nov 10.
