As you start reading through the Daily Bible, what do you hope to learn from it? What aspect of reading through it this year are you most excited about?
I am excited to share what I learn with my children. It is frustrating that many children’s bibles and story books mislead our youngsters with half-truths and falsehoods. Since many of the stories in these books focus on Old Testament stories I am enjoying our current reading on creation and the story of Noah. I quickly realized the importance of actually knowing the scripture myself so that I could easily spot when these supplemental materials are wrong and go against God’s Word. Surprisingly, my memory of these stories wasn’t exactly accurate with what God’s Word actually said either and reminded me of the importance of reading and rereading scripture daily even if we think we already know the scripture. Of course we’ll still use the children’s books to teach our children but use those reading times as teachable moments to what the scripture actually states. Jen-I too am excited to read through the entire bible. I have done it before for a class in college but didn’t spend the time reflecting and thinking like I should have.
Cassie and I are excited to see how things happened and are related chronologically. We (at least Damian) find that it can get confusing, and it's easy to forget even if you know, what else might have had an influence on a passage and why it was written. We're going to go read Day 4!
I am really enjoying the reading and am excited to read through the whole bible. I like the commentary/descriptions that one reads before and/or after the reading. It makes the words that you are about to read or have already read a little more clear. It also restates it in a bit of a different manner that helps me understand it better.
Yoder - I agree, it is interesting to see how many of the details I had forgotten. Specifically, I had forgotten that there were more than two of some of the animals on the ark. The songs and the children's books always leave that detail out. I guess it is a good thing I reading the real stories again.
I am excited because I actually have a long term plan. A lot of times I just get frozen in reading my Bible because I don't know what to read. Growing up in the church, you do become familiar with the stories of the OT...but as some of you have said so far, there are things we forget or things that aren't as prominently taught as others. Eric - I also was interested that it was more than just pairs of animals herded onto the Ark. I am looking forward to the challenge of the long term commitment and excited for God to open my heart and mind to "new" Truths. ~Shanna
Adrian: Yeah, what's with that? I thought I had learned that it was God limiting Man's lifespan, but the editorial comment seemed to indicate it was more of a Postponement of judgement for 120 years. thoughts?
Anyway... Boy I have so many comments... like:
• Don't know how I missed/forgot that Sarai was Abrams half sister.
• love the reminder of how Lot chose to live "near" Sodom and Gommorah but then ended up living IN Sodom.
• pg29 day 6. in editorial comment "God's Covenant with Abram" 2nd paragraph... it explains the covenant ritual's use of split carcasses. I never before caught this part, "God alone passes through the carcasses, indicating the unique one-sidedness of this covenant." Gen 15:17. wow.
I'm curious about what you guys are learning. do share.
I'm excited to actually read all the way through the bible in one year. I have never done that before.

ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to getting past the book of Numbers. I always seem to get stuck there.
ReplyDeleteOh and what do you guys think about the verse that says man can only live 120 years?

one more thing... why can't I believe like Abraham? Gen 15:6 "Abraham believed the Lord and he credited to him as righteousness."
